It time once again for your favorite political discussion and mine - A-Team Coffee and Politics!

This meetup will have a political topic that we'll talk about to begin with. We usually let the conversation move in any direction that it wants to and eventually it turns into a chance to just get to know more about each other. These meetups are a great way to get to know us.

Topic:
The drug war. Should we keep fighting? Should we legalize? Should we do something in between?

As always, everyone is welcome and encouraged to come!

For those interested in the Iowa Board of Pharmacy hearings about medical marijuana - which are still ongoing until November 4, 2009- check out http://www.state.ia.us/ibpe... Comments can be made in writing or via telephone. Note, for us "rationalists" - personal OPINIONS do not hold great weight - medical EVIDENCE is preferred. Note the Pharmacy board web page heading "Board is seeking information including, but not limited to, the following..."

    •  This was a good meeting. Enjoyed the topic, and the conversation that covered a wide range of opinions and views. Especially appreciated Niles providing a good historical framework for the discussions.
    •  Sorry that we had to leave early. Let's see if I can provide some BRIEF (and thus weak) additional information. The questions about tobacco or alcohol as drugs: Drugs have a legal definition, a part of which is INTENDED use. Vitamin C, even as tablets, are not drugs unless the LABEL states "use for scurvy." So, neither tobacco nor alcohol are INTENDED for medical use. Drug advertising - FDA is constrained both by law (established by Congress) and court decisions - we have very liberal freedom of speech laws, in this country (pro-Nazi literature is not legal in Germany, but is in the US), and FDA has lost various freedom of speech cases. INTENDED use is the key for a lot of this - rhetorical question, which is ultimately answered by regulation and law - does the INTENDED use of marijuana meet the medical "benefit vs risk" requirements to make it ACCEPTABLE for medical use? - those are among the issues that the Board of Pharmacy will be dealing with.
