We're trying a new event based on Coffee and Politics - Beer and Philosophy!

This event is intended to be a smaller, more intimate group setting. While we love having a large crowd for our other meetups, it's just not conducive to the conversation. For that reason, I ask that everyone keep their RSVP up-to-date and to respect the limit.

This meetup will have a philosophical topic that we'll talk about to begin with. The conversation will move in any direction that it wants to and eventually it turns into a chance to just get to know more about each other.

Topic:
Sam Harris recently gave a talk at the TED conference about Science and Human Values. The talk is about 23 minutes long, and it and Sam Harris's response to his critics can be seen here.

Can human morality be determined scientifically? Think about it, and then come and discuss it over a few beers with your fellow A-Team members.

It's a small sample, but it's sounding like those who sat in the isolated booth didn't have a problem with noise, but the folks who sat at the table thought it was noisy and crowded.

Here's a link to the book I mentioned by Michael Shermer. It has much more depth about this subject than the TED video: http://www.michaelshermer.c... Shermer also writes a monthly column for Scientific American. He wrote a great article about hard / soft sciences and ?integrative science? that we touched upon at our table: http://www.scientificameric...

Here's a link to the vid I'd mentioned (Sam Harris & Michael Shermer rationally dismantle ravings of Deepok Chopra and ramblings of Jean Houston). My favorite segment is titled "Scientist Takes on Deepak's Science": http://abcnews.go.com/Night... Speaking of relevant vids, if you're interested in the line of morality questions we discussed (the trolley scenarios), here's a lively and entertaining set of vids from an undergrad Harvard Justice course: http://www.justiceharvard.o...

I could set it up to allow maybe RSVPs with a group number limit, but I decided it was fairer to everyone to disallow maybe RSVPs on this event. I'd rather leave room for the people who can commit to being there than have slots taken by those who may or may not show up.

For some reason I thought limiting the group still allowed for maybes. My bad.

There's no maybe because there's a cap on the number of people tho can RSVP yes. Like the Coffee and Politics, I'm trying to keep this as a smaller, more intimate setting, and having 20-odd people there would make it too hard to hear everyone.

We split into two groups -- I'm sure the other group had as fascinating a discussion about philosophy as ours did. Great talking with newer folks (Bob, Robin, Mindy).
    •  Great opportunity to sit around and talk with good, smart people and drink beer.

For a discussion, RG's was crowded & noisy, but what bar isn't? Java Creek serves beer, is quieter, and we all fit at one table. ??

It was a good time, but I'm not sure that it was an optimal venue. I'm not really familiar enough with local establishments to know what would be better, though.
